In selecting the Luxembourg Gardens for your ceremony you have chosen a unique oasis in the heart of Paris’ fashionable left bank. It’s not only a romantic and inspirational location, but has also been listed as one of the “60 greatest places in the world.”
The grounds were originally owned by the Duke of Luxembourg, but acquired in 1612 Queen Marie de’ Medici 1 to build a garden to remind her of her childhood home, Florence’s “Palazzo Pitti”. (1. Lived 26 April 1575-4 July 1642. Widow of Henry IV regent/mother for the King Louis XIII.) The Medici Fountain was built by Tommaso Francini in 1630 and then refurbished in 1811 by command of Napoleon Bonaparte. Many surprises lay hidden within the gardens, such as the French Senate, bandstands and a bronze replica of the Statue of Liberty.
Being here, you are also in the good company of many famous writers and free thinkers, who have sat in these gardens for inspiration: poet Baudelaire, writer and politician Lamartine, dramatist Musset, novelist Baroness Dudevant who wrote under the pen name of George Sand and more familiar names such as and Victor Hugo, who featured the gardens in his historic novel Les Misérables.
In more recent times, this is where the famous existentialist philosophers Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre had their first romantic rendezvous. The gardens were also one of the favourite retreats of American journalist and author Ernest Hemingway, and a place where he would meet many of his literary contemporaries, such as Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound.
Photo: Eiffel Tower Park, ParisParis is wonderful at any time of year, so you don't have to wait for a summer wedding or renewal of vows ceremony. You could elope, and have an intimate ceremony for two, or have a small wedding entourage of (up to 10) close family and friends.
Why not follow your ceremony with a relaxing picnic in the park, or a champagne reception at one of the nearby traditional French cafés? Spend the evening over a romantic dinner, or finish a perfect day with your guests in the friendly atmosphere of a Paris restaurant or floating down the Seine on a bateau mouche. Marie and Richard (below) certainly enjoyed their renewal of vows ceremony in Paris.
